Tips for the Perfect Backyard Birthday Bash

Hey y'all! We just hosted a backyard birthday bash for our sweet  4 year old Berdee and thought it would be fun to share a few tips. After 13 years of throwing kid birthday parties, I've found that they have a few common factors.

TIP #1

It doesn't have to be fancy. I only spent $12 on decor for this party (thank you dollar store). While decorations are important, they don't have to break the bank. We hung balloons on the strings of lights in our yard and added a couple strings of fringe here and there and called it good. It was enough to make the space feel intentional but wasn't over the top.

TIP #2

Pick one or two activites or games. You get a big group of kids together and they will start playing with or without planned games. I've over planned activies before but found that less is more. This time we got a bounce house and a pony and called it good. No need for organized games. The kids had a blast and I only had to gather everyone once when we sang Happy Birthday and opened presents. Then off they went to play again.

TIP #3

Food. It doesn't matter if it's just snacks or a full meal, but those kids will get hungry and running out of food or sending kids home hungry is the worst so its always best to plan extra food for your guests. We decied to keep it easy and have the party catered by my favorite mediteranian restaurant CousCous. It was perfect for kids and adults and I didn't have to cook or clean up.

Now for a few party details. Berdee wanted all things Unicorn and Rainbows so we rented a pony with a unicorn headband from Pony Haven in Bountiful. They delivered Annie the pony and Berdee about died right there! She was such a pretty little pony and so good with the kids. She gave steady rides for the entire 2 hours with no complaint.

Happiest birthday girl!

I thought it would be fun to have some cotton candy too. I found Lolli Puff on instagram. They said they could whip up rainbow cottoncandy for the party, they didn't tell me they could make cottoncandy animals and shapes! Everyone was freaking out at these daring edible clouds. And the flavors where as unique as the shapes. They had everyting from lavender to mango.

And the narwal!  No words. No words.

Even a little owl, pineapple and flamingo. There was no end to the cuteness.

Berdee found these unicorn inspired lucky charm donuts on pintrest. We picked up some Johnny O's spudnuts, got a couple dozen with sprinkles and a couple dozen glazed. Then we went home and dipped them in some frosting and covered them with lucky charms. They were a hit!

The bounce house was from The Guy With the Bounce House. They are a local family owned business. They brought it early and came to pack it up after the party was over. They were so nice, kind to the kids, and very efficient and quick.

We had one happy little girl! This was her first birthday party so we went all out! Other years we keep it really simple with family but I believe 2-3 over the top birthday parties is all a kid really needs in life.
